Holliday describes joining Roger Preston Chew's battery, the action around Culpeper September 12-13, 1863, hiding out in the federally occupied town, attempt to reach Confederate lines, incarceration at Old Capitol Prison and Point Lookout where prisoners were guarded by U.S. Colored Troops, scurvey, return in June, 1865 on the "City of New York" and walk home to Winchester through Charlottesville and Ivy. With the memoir is a hand copied map of the Chesapeake Bay showing the location of Point Lookout. Among the persons mentioned are John Minor Botts, John S. Pendleton, and Alexander S. Webb.

Botts was born in Dumfries, Virginia to prominent lawyer Benjamin Gaines Botts (1776 - 1811) and his wife Jane Tyler Botts (1782 - 1811). Roger Preston Chew, born April 9, 1843 in Loudan County, Virginia, was a Confederate commander during the Civil War. Having graduated from the Virginia Military Institute after completing an accelerated program, Chew served as captain of the "Ashby" Battery of the horse artillery, serving under Stonewall Jackson until his death.
